Air NZ's ambitious reduction target | Air New Zealand has become the second airline globally to announce an ambitious science-based emissions reduction target, aiming to cut absolute emissions by over 16% by 2030 (from a 2019 baseline). Key focus areas will be sustainable aviation fuel and zero emissions technologies. | | | |
Ground-breaking farming trial | Ngāi Tahu Farming (in partnership with Ngāi Tūāhuriri) has been given an $8 million grant to research regenerative farming practices. The study will compare the environmental, financial and social impacts of different kinds of farming over time and could determine New Zealand's environmental and economic future. | | | |
Low interest loans to go electric | Westpac NZ has launched a new low-interest personal loan to support more New Zealanders to buy EVs, e-bikes, e-scooters and e-mopeds. The loan will make sustainable forms of transport accessible for more New Zealanders, helping them reduce their carbon footprint and cut down running costs. | | | |
Swapping coal for wood biomass | Fonterra will replace the coal boiler at its Waitoa factory with a 30-megawatt unit that runs on wood biomass as it looks to reduce its carbon footprint. Expected to be up and running by November 2023, the boiler will reduce Waitoa’s annual emissions by a whopping 48,000t CO2e. | | | |
'Smarter' EV chargers at home | EECA is calling for submissions from the public around improving the performance of electric vehicle chargers. This feedback will feed into the conversation about the government’s role in encouraging the uptake of “smart” EV charging technologies to support New Zealand’s transition to a low emissions economy. | | | |
