Mike Burrell video update from WBCSD Liaison Delegate meeting

Last week, our Executive Director Mike Burrell represented SBC at the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) Liaison Delegate meeting. Here’s a quick video update where he explains his main takeaways from the conference, some of the key focuses for WBCSD, some exciting opportunities and more. 

   

SBC Advisory Board Chair Gareth Marriot on ensuring a just transition

SBC Advisory Board Chair and OCS CEO Gareth Marriott wrote an opinion piece for the Herald outlining why it's so critical we keep people at the heart of our transition to a low emissions economy. This is closely aligned with recommendation six of our joint SBC/CLC pre-election policy paper: accelerating action to ensure a just transition.

   

Energy companies launch new collaboration: Powering Change

A group of New Zealand energy companies, including a number of SBC members, have collaborated and committed to help reduce emissions in order to build a more sustainable future for all Kiwis. Their collaboration, called 'Powering Change', sets out progress on New Zealand’s climate change goals. Well done to all SBC members involved!

   

Mercury's new wind farm, the biggest in NZ, now open for business

The switch has been flicked on at Turitea, New Zealand's biggest wind farm (owned by Mercury) boasting 60 turbines and transmission infrastructure. “Mercury takes a long-term view when it comes to significant investment in new electricity generation, and this includes our commitment to custodianship of this site,” said Chief Executive Vince Hawksworth.

   

Business' future is low emissions

Only 55% of New Zealand business leaders see climate change as an important issue. However, some business leaders already on their journey, including leaders from Silver Fern Farms, Waste Management and more, believe deprioritising climate action due to economic concerns are missing the win-win. HW Richardson leading on hydrogen adoption

Transport group HW Richardson will begin transitioning its fleet of 1,300-to green hydrogen this year, aiming to have its first 10 dual-fuel hydrogen trucks on the road by 2024. “We generate and distribute a lot of diesel and unleaded fuel and, as the largest transport operator in the country, we think it’s incumbent on us to help transition the industry away from fossil fuels.”

   

Four brands, including EnviroWaste, coming together as EnviroNZ

EnviroWaste, ChemWaste, EnviroEarth and EnviroWay are bringing all their brands together under the EnviroNZ name from 1 June 2023, though the services they provide will remain the same. The company vision imagines a future where looking after the environment is second nature for everyone. Learn more here.

   

Te Whatu Ora gets funding boost for mitigation projects

Following a significant contribution from the State Sector Decarbonisation Fund (SSDF), Te Whatu Ora will invest a total of $130m in climate change mitigation projects over the next few years, including removing all coal boilers from hospitals, the conversion of natural gas boilers, transitioning to LED lighting, electrifying Te Whatu Ora’s vehicle fleet and more.
