New CLC Manager: Shannil Varma

We are very pleased to introduce the new Manager of the Climate Leaders Coalition, Shannil Varma, who is joining our team in November! Shannil joins us with extensive experience in creating and leading sustainability strategy implementations and initiatives within business and the public sector, and we are very excited to have him on the team. MfE releases new report: Our atmosphere and climate 2023

In its new 'Our atmosphere and climate' report (produced every three years), the Ministry for the Environment explores how and why our atmosphere and climate are changing, and considers the current and future effects of these changes on the things we care about. Auckland Council installs first low carbon pipes

Auckland Council is installing low carbon concrete pipes made from alternative materials like fly ash and blast-furnace slag. The pipes achieve a 22% reduction in emissions compared with traditional concrete pipes and are a step towards Auckland's climate plan, which includes a 50% reduction in GHG emissions and a 2050 target of net zero emissions.

   

5 nature trends starting to shape business in 2023

In December last year, COP15 (UN Biodiversity Conference) ended with a landmark agreement to protect nature. Here’s an opinion piece from US-based GreenBiz outlining five of the trends and topics starting to emerge in the nature space, though noting there are still major inconsistencies in how these topics are typically discussed and applied.

SBC members getting involved in Recycling Week 2023

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Recycling Week, an annual initiative to raise awareness and educating New Zealand on best practices for waste minimisation and recycling. A number of SBC members are involved in this year's campaign, including SkyCity, Naylor Love, and Phoenix Metalman check out their case studies here.

   

2023 among NZ's warmest years

This year has been one of the hottest for New Zealand's land and seas combined, with the first six months of 2023 also shown to be the wettest across much of the country. “Human activity is both an underlying driver of change, and that these activities in turn will bear the brunt of the adverse effects. In sum: Aotearoa is warming; it’s us. We are sure. It’s bad. But we can do something about it.”

   

Waka Kotahi to fund Taranaki Regional Council's first electric bus

Taranaki Regional Council has received $308,000 in funding from the Waka Kotahi bus decarbonisation contestable fund, which it will use to help pay for the region's first electric bus“The initiative will help lower emissions, improve air quality and support the council’s goal of mitigating climate change now and in the long term.”
