SBC closure over the summer period

Can't believe it's already that time of year again  and what an eventful year it's been! The SBC office will be closed from 5pm on 22 December, reopening on 9 January 2023, and Pānui will resume on 19 January. From our SBC whānau to yours, wishing you a happy and restful summer break. We look forward to seeing you in the new year!
   

XRB publishes climate-related disclosures standards

The XRB has published standards for climate related disclosures. Around 200 of New Zealand’s most economically significant entities will start reporting against the standards from 1 January 2023. The reporting regime will help to drive capital towards activities that support the transition to a low-emissions future.

   

Watch highlights from the Climate Change & Business Conference

The 2022 Climate Change and Business Conference took place earlier this year in September with over 500 in-person attendees (and 200+ online), which was the largest turnout in the conference's 14-year history. Check out some of the highlights from the two-day event, and stay tuned for more information about next year's conference coming out soon.
   

SBC members represent at the Deloitte Top 200 awards

The Deloitte Top 200 awards took place last week, with Jolie Hodson (Spark) winning CEO of the Year, Fonterra winning Most Improved Performance, and Spark winning Diversity & Inclusion Leadership. Other SBC member finalists include Briscoe Group, Meridian, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, Toyota, Steel & Tube, Silver Fern Farms, and Lion. Congratulations all!

   

New Zealand to support biodiversity targets at COP15 in Montreal

Conservation Minister Poto Williams is leading Aotearoa’s delegation to COP15, the Fifteenth Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity in Montreal this week. "New Zealand supports a global protection target of 30% by 2030, and is actively advocating to ensure this target delivers real conservation outcomes and respects the rights of indigenous peoples." 

   

Secretary for the Environment and Chief Executive for MfE appointed

Current Hawkes Bay Regional Council Chief Executive James Palmer has been appointed to the position of Secretary for the Environment and Chief Executive of the Ministry for the Environment, the Government’s primary advisor on environmental issues, including managing the climate change response. James’ five-year appointment begins 1 March 2023.

   

Chapman Tripp create new Director role in sustainability

In the first appointment of its kind, the incredible Kate Wilson Butler (previously SBC's Head of Climate Action) has been welcomed as Chapman Tripp's new Director of Climate, Sustainability and ESG Practice role. The role is designed to cement focus on climate change, sustainability and ESG across all practices. Exciting times ahead!

   

New Building Act energy efficiency amendments explained (ESP) 

The government recently announced that building energy efficiency ratings may soon be mandatory for New Zealand businesses. Check out this blog from ESP that outlines the amendments, what they mean for business and what industry leaders (including ESP CEO Lincoln Watson) have to say about the changes and their potential impact on businesses.

As a subgroup of Deloitte and the Sustainable Business Council’s CFO Climate & Sustainability Programme, Business New Zealand and Deloitte Private are piloting the Sustainability for ‘finance hat wearers’ course for Auckland-based SMEs, a 4-part course of 1.5 hour lunchtime sessions.
