New Zealand Steel unveils the country's biggest emissions reduction project

New Zealand Steel has partnered with the Government and Contact Energy, with legal advice from Chapman Tripp, to shrink the carbon footprint of its Glenbrook steel mill through a new $300M electric arc furnaceThe project will almost halve New Zealand Steel's carbon emissions and eliminate 800,000 tonnes of carbon, which equates to 1% of the country's total emissions. SBC welcomes this announcement and the impact it will have on Aotearoa New Zealand’s ability to deliver emissions reductions. Congratulations to New Zealand Steel, as well as the other SBC members involved!

Māori frameworks needed to recloak the whenua

Led by Manaaki Whenua Kaihautū Māori Research Impact Leader Dr Shaun Awatere, the impact of extreme weather events and climate change on Māori communities is being investigated by a team of researchers focused on a te ao Māori perspective. "There is a need to rebalance the system and ensure Māori are at the decision-making table."

Tourism Sector Climate Change Adaptation roadmap launched

The Aotearoa Circle and SBC members including SkyCity, Ngāi Tahu, Tourism Industry Aotearoa, and Air New Zealand have developed a strategy and roadmap of actions to create a tourism sector that is proactively planning for the future and building long-term resilience. ASB launches new Business Sustainability Loan

ASB is helping businesses on their sustainability journey with its new Business Sustainability Loan, aimed at supporting initiatives that will deliver positive social and environmental outcomes. ASB Acting Executive General Manager Business Banking Ben Speedy says, "We see this new offering as a tool to accelerate change that will benefit both our people and our planet."

   

Emissions Trading Scheme consultation opens

The Government has launched further consultation on updates to New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme limits and price control settings for units. Consultation will be open for a four-week period, ending on 16 June 2023. All stakeholders with an interest in the ETS are encouraged to review the discussion document and have their say by clicking here.
