SBC and CLC release pre-election policy priorities 

Ahead of October's General Election, SBC and CLC have released our joint climate policy priorities for an incoming Government. The briefing paper, created in consultation with the 160+ SBC and CLC businesses, sets out 10 key recommendations to advance a net-zero and climate-resilient future. Climate Change Commission releases draft advice for ERP 2

Consultation is now open on the Climate Change Commission’s draft advice to Government on New Zealand’s second emissions reduction plan (2026-2030). The final plan will provide critical pathways for securing a zero-emissions and resilient future for Aotearoa. "The Government must now broaden, strengthen, and accelerate action so the country can meet its climate change objectives."

   

Government commits extra $16.2 million to GIDI fund

The government has committed an extra $16.2 million to the Government Investment in Decarbonising Industry (GIDI) fund to reduce industrial emissions. SBC and CLC welcome this news, given its alignment with one of the recommendations made in our pre-election policy priorities paper around decarbonising industrial processes.

   

Fonterra continues decarbonising its sites, transitions away from coal

Fonterra has announced its Hautapu site will be transitioning from coal to wood pellets, and its Palmerston North milk processing site will be installing a heat pump and solar thermal system that supplies the local market. Both projects have recieved support from  the Government Investment in Decarbonising Industry (GIDI) Process Heat Contestable Fund described above. Toyota focused on helping establish a hydrogen economy in New Zealand

Toyota New Zealand is introducing new hydrogen technologies in the form of vehicles, fuels cells, and now fully renewable hydrogen generators to support various sectors. “While we continue to reduce emissions within our light vehicle fleet, we are highly motivated to introduce new hydrogen technology to help us decarbonise our overall business and the economy.”

Fletcher Building opens Concrete Innovation Lab

Fletcher Building has opened the country's first commercial Concrete Innovation Lab, demonstrating its commitment to developing sustainable concrete solutions. “Prioritising concrete innovation is crucial if we are going to succeed in decarbonising the built environment...As an industry leader, we have a responsibility to lead the way in innovating for a more sustainable future.”


   

Auckland Council report reveals NZ consumption emissions

Auckland Council has released a report that will enable better understanding of carbon emissions from a consumption point of view, rather than production. Using this report, you can see the emissions generated by spending habits, using a table of commodities that give a CO2e value per $ spend across a range of categories. Read the full report here.
