ETS settings updated, CCC recommendations embedded

We’re pleased to see the Government has accepted the recommendations outlined by the CCC in updating the Emissions Trading Scheme unit limits and price control settings for 2023-2028. SBC and CLC are preparing a joint submission to MfE's current consultation which will look to ensure the ETS is fit for the job ahead, so keep an eye out for the final version.

   

NZ's top 10 solar projects

Solar energy in New Zealand is on the rise, with the number of solar installations growing by an average of 38% a year. Check out this article (paywalled) outlining exciting projects from SBC and CLC members Helios, Transpower, Christchurch Airport, Contact, EVA Marketplace, Mercury, Ryman Healthcare, Chapman Tripp, Westpac, Genesis, Watercare, Meridian, Foodstuffs and Eastland Generation. 

   

SBC Talks Tools with All Heart NZ

In this edition of SBC Talks Tools, we catch up with Chief Encourager Joe Youssef from All Heart NZ, a social enterprise aimed at redirecting corporate equipment waste from landfill and passing it on to the communities that need it most. Since being founded, All Heart has collected a whopping 5 million kilograms of redundant corporate equipment waste! Learn more about All Heart NZ here.

   

Ravensdown receives first shipment of low-carbon urea

Ravensdown has recieved a 2,700 tonne shipment of low-carbon urea, which produces 64% less CO2 than standard processing. With urea accounting for 36% of fertiliser used in New Zealand, this is a significant step in helping farmers lower their GHG emissions, with Ravensdown working through the value chain to support them.

   

Welcome new SBC member Comvita

Comvita is the global market leader in Mānuka honey and bee consumer goods. It has pledged to be carbon neutral by 2025 and set science-based carbon reduction targets, as well as focusing on regeneration through its Mānuka forest planting programme and kaitiakitanga (guardianship) for bees. It has an ambitious goal to rescue over 100 million bees globally every year. Welcome Comvita to the SBC whānau!

SLP in-person 2-day in Wellington

Last week the 2023 Sustainability Leadership Programme cohort came together for the two-day component of the programme, where they collaborated, connected and networked, explored ways to accelerate sustainability progress, and inspired one another with their journeys. Registrations for the 2024 course are open, so join the taster session in February to learn more.
   

Waka Kotahi Reshaping Streets

The Government has given councils new powers to make street changes more easily. Reshaping Streets is a package of regulatory changes that will enable councils and communities to work together to modify their existing streets to provide more space for people to move around, including adding and improving cycleways and walkways as low carbon transport methods.

In this webinar, Auckland Council will demonstrate how scope three emissions can be calculated using spend data, based on a ‘consumption emissions’ approach which accounts for supply chain emissions.
