Better Futures 2023 Report launches

Kantar and SBC have launched the 2023 Better Futures Report, revealing concern around climate remains stable, but commitment to living sustainably has dropped since 2022 – likely due in part to the cost of living crisis, which once again came out as the #1 concern for Kiwis. Nature conversation becoming more critical, especially for Directors

The SBC team met with Peter Beare, WBCSD's Manager of Nature-based Solutions, to chat about applying nature action workstreams in Aotearoa (a new inclusion in our refreshed strategy). On a similar note, Chapman Tripp and the Aotearoa Circle have just released a full legal opinion around the role of company directors in identifying and managing nature-based risks. New Waitematā Harbour crossing options unveiled

The Government has unveiled five scenarios for the additional Waitematā Harbour crossing. Importantly, each of the five scenarios includes sustainable transport options like walking, cycling, and rapid transport. "Through the Government’s investment we are building a linked up rapid transit network across the city, to provide faster, safer, low-carbon travel."  
   

Government ushers in new era for New Zealand's waste system

The Ministry for the Environment has announced fundamental changes to the way we make, use, recycle and dispose of things, including a new waste strategy to set New Zealand's direction on waste for the next three decades, new and more comprehensive waste legislation, and improved household recycling and food scrap collections. New leave offerings announced, including gender affirmation leave

SBC members Suncorp and Mercury have announced new leave policies. Suncorp will be introducing six weeks' paid gender affirmation leave, and Mercury has announced a bolstered parental leave offering and four weeks' gender affirmation leave. It's inspiring to see members supporting their workforces this way  ka mau te wehi! 
   

New biomass boilers to cut hospital emissions in half in Canterbury

A new energy centre (built by Naylor Love) that uses sustainably produced wood biomass will help slash Canterbury hospitals' (run by Te Whatu Ora) reliance on coal. "The replacement of the coal boilers will deliver the reliable energy that our staff and patients deserve while honouring our commitment to drive towards a more environmentally sustainable organisation."

The Sustainable Business Council, Environmental Defence Society, and Climate Leaders Coalition are proud to again partner to deliver the 15th Climate Change & Business Conference at the Viaduct Events Centre in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland on 19-20 September 2023. The conference will provide a timely opportunity for business, government and civil society to tackle the tough questions the country is facing, and to share innovative thinking and new ideas about how we can collectively accelerate emissions reductions while building our resilience to the impacts of a warming world. Early bird prices available until 30 June 2023.
