COP28 kicks off in Dubai today

The day has finally arrived! COP28 kicks off later today in Dubai, where over 70,000 people from around the world have congregated to progress global climate action. To stay plugged into what's happening on the ground, check out some of the various events on offer in the sections below, and if you're at COP, make sure to go along to some of the WBCSD events here.

   

SBC welcomes new Government

SBC is looking forward to continuing its important climate advocacy work alongside the newly formed Government, including new Climate Change Minister Simon Watts. Alongside the Climate Leaders Coalition, we are finalising a briefing for all Ministers holding climate-related portfolios, based on our joint Pre-Election Briefing Paper, which we will share with the membership soon.

   

This Climate Business: CLC turns 5

CLC CEO Steering Group Convenor Jolie Hodson and SBC Executive Director Mike Burrell spoke recently with Vincent Heeringa on his 'This Climate Business' podcast about CLC's five-year milestone, as well as the future of New Zealand's climate action under a new government. Westpac survey finds Kiwis are calling for more climate action

New research from Westpac shows around half of New Zealanders are more worried about climate change following this year’s severe weather events, and the majority are looking for affordable ways to take action in their own lives. "It’s great to see Kiwis so engaged on the issue of climate change, but time and cost considerations are holding them back from doing more."

   

Modern Slavery laws - how ready is your organisation?

SBC co-hosted an event last week alongside DLA Piper where we discussed modern slavery and worker exploitation issues globally, the key features of existing legislation elsewhere, supply chain compliance guidance, processes and systems, the repercussions of regulatory breaches, and more. The Sustainability Leadership Programme, delivered in partnership between SBC and Catapult, is a great course for anyone looking to develop and strengthen their leadership skills through the lens of sustainability. Chapter Zero NZ webinar: New Zealand insights from COP28

In this webinar, we will be joined by three New Zealand representatives attending COP28 (including SBC Executive Director Mike Burrell) to discuss their insights from the first week of the summit, including the World Climate Action Summit taking place on 1-2 December. This session will provide insights into some of the key discussions and outcomes of the first week, explore ways in which New Zealand Inc. could collectively respond to the challenges laid out, and discuss the role of NZ boards and business leaders in addressing the key COP28 outcomes.
