COP28 has been underway for nearly a week in Dubai, and there have been a number of hugely exciting announcements already:

It's not all roses – New Zealand was the first country this year to be awarded Fossil of the Day for the government's decision to re-open oil and gas exploration, and there have been some concerning comments about the phasing out of fossil fuels from the COP28 president, but overall this year's Conference has been described in a positive light as pragmatic, energising and action-focused.

New collaboration guidelines released

The Commerce Commission has issued guidance for businesses considering collaborating with competitors to pursue sustainability goals. "It’s important that competition law isn’t a roadblock to genuine collective action on climate issues and that equally, businesses don’t lose sight of competition when they’re considering significant transitions in markets to achieve sustainability goals."

   

Contact wins Deloitte Top 200 Sustainability Leadership Award

Huge congratulations to Contact Energy, which has won the Sustainability Leadership Award at the Deloitte Top 200 awards this week. A number of our members and their employees were amongst the winners and finalists for the various awards. SBC members among top performers in Forsyth Barr 2023 CESG ratings 

Forsyth Barr has released its second annual carbon, environment, social and governance ratings (CESG) report for 58 NZX-listed companies, with a number of SBC members coming in towards the top. Meridian has taken first place and Contact third, with Spark, Vector and Mercury also ranking in the top 10. Check out BusinessDesk's summary here.

   

Q&A with The Warehouse Group on historic solar announcement

In September, The Warehouse Group (TWG) announced its historic new solar deal with Lodestone Energy, which will see more than 260 sites across the country powered by solar. Chief Sustainability Officer and SBC Advisory Board member David Benattar caught up with the SBC team to answer some questions about the deal and what it means for TWG.

   

SBC and CLC release briefing for incoming Ministers

Alongside the Climate Leaders Coalition, SBC has produced and sent a briefing for all incoming Ministers holding climate-related portfolios (BIM), based on our Pre-Election Briefing Paper, which outlines the climate priorities of the membership and our plan for working with the new government to progress climate action initiatives. Have a read of the BIM here.

Air New Zealand purchases first Mission Next Gen electric aircraft

Air New Zealand has purchased its first electric aircraft as part of its goal of flying a commercial demonstrator by 2026. "This is a small but important step in a much larger journey for Air New Zealand. There is a lot of work ahead of us, but we are incredibly committed, and this purchase marks a new chapter for the airline."

   

Netlogix is now B Corp certified

Netlogix is now a Certified B Corporation, demonstrating its strong commitment to meeting high standards of environmental and social responsibility. The Netlogix business model aligns with B Corp’s values and goals, as its aims to ‘move more with less’ and reduce empty kilometres across the freight networks. Chapter Zero NZ webinar: New Zealand insights from COP28
