Read the International State of the Climate Report for 2021 

Released this week, the International State of The Climate Report for 2021 shows the world just broke several records for the highest levels of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. Victoria University climate science lecturer Dr Kyle Clem (lead editor of the report's chapter on Antarctica) said 2021 was a year of extremes in the region.  

   

ANZ launches green business loan 

ANZ Bank New Zealand has launched a Business Green Loan offering the lowest advertised floating rate in the market for a green loan. “We’ve led the way with sustainable finance for our Institutional customers and we’re proud to now offer a Business Green Loan to support more businesses wanting to invest in sustainable practices.”

Meridian to double the number of EV chargers in Wellington 

Meridian is partnering with Wellington and Hutt City Councils to deliver its new Zero EV charging network, which will double the current number of EV charging stations in the region. "Once the Zero rollout is complete, Wellington will have one of the biggest destination charging networks in Aotearoa.”   

   

Z Energy protecting biodiversity 

Z Energy is helping fund The Nature Conservancy (TNC)’s Aotearoa Blue Carbon Project through its new $1 million Biodiversity Fund. TNC’s Blue Carbon Project will work to implement a natural climate solution by restoring salt marshes in key coastline locations across Aotearoa, maximising the “blue carbon” storage potential of our natural ecosystems.

Welcome to new SBC member Briscoe Group, the holding company for Briscoes Homeware, Rebel Sport and Living & Giving. The Briscoes brand purpose of helping Kiwis live a better life and stay healthy has formed the foundation of the Briscoe Group’s commitment to sustainability as they navigate this journey under the banner of “Steps to a Better Tomorrow”.  

   

New Profile Group facility scores 5 Green Star rating 

Profile Group’s newly-constructed low carbon manufacturing hub in Hautapu has set a benchmark and achieved a 5 Green Star industrial design rating from NZGBC. “We don’t believe in cutting corners, we’re passionate about impressive architecture and design, and we take our responsibility to protect the environment seriously.” 

   

LIC and Pāmu collaborate to breed low-methane emitting cows 

Research from LIC has revealed that genetics play a role in how much methane a cow emits. “This year, in partnership with Pāmu, we will breed from bulls that we’ve identified to be high or low methane emitters. We’ll measure their emissions as growing yearlings and during their first milking season to ensure they’re representative of their fathers.”

Before joining SBC, Charlotte spent 3.5 years as the Senior Sustainability Specialist for Ports of Auckland. She has a passion for helping organisations realise the positive role they can have on the environment, their people, and their stakeholders.

The Wellington Chamber of Commerce is on a mission to get you moving on your sustainability journey. If you’re a small to medium business they’re offering a Six Session Bootcamp to equip you with all the tools you need to GoZero.
