Welcome Antonia Burbidge to the SBC whānau!

We are very pleased to announce that Antonia Burbidge is joining SBC as our Head of Climate and Sustainability. Antonia joins us from the Climate Change Commission, where she's been leading the development of the second emissions reduction plan advice. She's previously worked in roles at MBIE and the UK Department for Energy and Climate Change. Welcome Antonia!

   

Historic ocean treaty signed after 10 years of negotiations 

After 38 hours of talks (and a decade of negotiations), nations have reached a landmark agreement to place 30% of the world's oceans into protected areas. These areas will put limits on how much fishing can take place, the routes of shipping lanes, and explorations on activities like deep sea mining. This is a huge win for the environment!
   

Decisive climate action could bring $64bn gain to NZ economy by 2050

According to new research from Deloitte’s Turning Point report, decisive climate action could deliver $64 billion to NZ’s economy by 2050. In contrast, inadequate action will take its toll on productivity, health and wellbeing, agriculture, and tourism, potentially costing our economy $4.4 billion. Read the full report here. 

   

Pushing the Sustainability Ceiling

International Women's Day is a great opportunity to celebrate and learn from the inspiring wāhine in our lives – and we don’t have to look far to find great examples of female leaders truly pushing the ceiling of sustainability in New Zealand. Hear from SBC Advisory Board members Carol Ward, Claire Walker, Alice Andrew and Laura Scampion about their journeys as sustainability leaders.
   

Ryman Healthcare signs solar power agreement alongside Mercury

Ryman Healthcare has signed an agreement on the development of a solar farm in Northland which will supply power in a first for the retirement industry. The $35 million solar farm, which will save an estimated 3,294 tonnes of carbon a year, is also ‘sleeved’ by Mercury to ensure a reliable supply to Ryman’s villages regardless of solar output on a given day.

   

Thousands march in climate strike

Thousands of people around the motu turned out last Friday for climate strikes. The organisers of the protest have five demands: no new fossil fuel mining or exploration, a rebate for e-bikes, greater marine protection, funding a transition to regenerative farming and lowering the voting age to 16. "This is our future that we're trying to prepare for and our planet. We don't have another option."
