60 businesses emerge as climate leaders
The big news today is that 60 of New Zealand's leading CEOs have pledged to take action on climate change. The group, including the leaders of Z, Westpac, Ngai Tahu Holdings, Vector, Air New Zealand, Spark and NZ Post, wants to help New Zealand transition to a low emissions economy to create a positive future for New Zealanders, business, and the economy. Positive reaction to coalition
The coalition statement has been welcomed widely, including by the Minister for Climate Change, James Shaw. Speaking on Morning Report today after Mike Bennetts of Z Energy and Alison Silk of Westpac were interviewed, Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, Simon Upton said: "Climate change... has finally found its way to the absolute heart of the financial system... if we don't have businesses and investors taking this stuff seriously, we're not going to get very far." Climate scientist James Renwick is encouraged that businesses see climate change action as an opportunity, and the global non-profit coalitions, We Mean Business and We Are Still In have also expressed their support.
Hear from the Climate Leaders panel
The launch of the CEOs' Climate Change Statement in Auckland included a panel discussion on what it takes to transition to a low-emissions economy, with Adrian Orr, Governor of the Reserve Bank, Livia Esterhazy, CEO of WWF NZ, Mandy Simpson from Singularity University and Mike Bennetts, CEO of Z Energy. Business supports moves to reduce emissions
In a survey of more than 1,200 business leaders commissioned by Westpac, 7 out of 10 Kiwi businesses want New Zealand to take action on limiting greenhouse gas emissions. Encouraging voluntary action to limit greenhouse gas emissions, subsidising research into carbon-saving technology, and introducing regulations that ban some high-emission activities drew the most support.
Power generation in a changing climate
Vector has commissioned research from EY considering how the most likely climate change scenarios might affect the Auckland region, including sea level rise, the frequency and severity of wind and storms, changing rain patterns and temperature extremes. Kate Beddoe, Vector's Chief Risk Officer talks about how Vector can manage these changes.
