Five years of climate action 

Z Energy Chief Executive Mike Bennetts reflects on his five years as Convenor of the Climate Leaders Coalition, from its beginning with 12 founding members to now almost 100 signatories committing to more ambitious climate change action.

Plastic free with the Warehouse

The 2022 Better Futures Report revealed New Zealanders' personal commitment to living sustainably continues on an upward trend. The Warehouse Group has a unique position as the largest general merchandiser to help people live and buy more sustainably, and in this article it shares the solutions it has implemented to cut down plastic use and provide sustainable buying options. 

Upgrades increase power for Genesis 

The first of three new generators for Genesis’ Tuai Power Station was switched on last week, an upgrade that will boost the plant’s electricity production by enough energy to power an extra 1000 homes. Once Tuai’s other two generators are replaced, the total upgrade project will increase the power station’s generation capacity by 6MW. Check out the timelapse video of the project here.

Hikotron going nationwide 

Mercury is supporting Hamilton start-up Hikotron in its rollout of a New Zealand-made smart AC charging network for electric vehicles, starting with 500 public charge points by 2026. The partnership is for an initial three-year period and considers electricity supply, joint brand and marketing and broader EV charging initiatives.

New ETS advice welcomed

Climate Change Minister James Shaw has welcomed new advice from the Climate Change Commission on Emissions Trading Scheme settings, which you can read here.

Next Generation scholarships

The Climate Change and Business Conference Next Generation Scholarship applications are now open. Sponsored by thinkstep-anz, these scholarships entitle the recipients to a full registration to attend the 2022 Climate Change and Business Conference: Now to Net Zero. The scholarships are available to 18-30 year-olds with a demonstrable interest in and/or affiliation with the role of business in relation to climate change. Lion has released its 2021 sustainability report, outlining its 2030 vision as a force for good and demonstrating its progress against a series of ambitious targets. You can read the report here.

International Speaker Series: Climate action in the Pacific Islands with Patricia Mallam

Join Commissioners Dr Tanira Kingi, and Professor James Renwick in hearing from Patricia Mallam, a senior strategic communications professional working at 350 Pacific, a youth-led grassroots movement working with communities to fight climate change on the frontline of the climate crisis in Fiji.
