Christchurch Airport joins EV100 initiative
Christchurch Airport has become the first business in the South Island to sign up to the global initiative called EV100, committing to transitioning its vehicle fleet to 100% electric. Chief executive Malcolm Johns says the move will strengthen the airport's efforts to become more sustainable.
IAG gets Rainbow Tick
IAG NZ has become the first general insurer in Aotearoa to gain the Rainbow Tick. The Rainbow Tick programme is designed to ensure an organisation is safe, welcoming and inclusive for people of diverse sexual orientation and gender identity. It joins other SBC members, such as Westpac NZ, SKYCITY, KPMG, Vector, Flick, EY, BNZ, Auckland Council, Spark and Z Energy. 
EECA energy cost estimation tool
Got the feeling your office kitchen appliances are pushing your electricity bills through the roof? Check out EECA's new Rightware Tool, which compares the running costs of fridges, freezers, heat pumps, TVs, dishwashers and clothes washers. 
Taking the politics out of climate change
The National Party has written to the Prime Minister and Climate Change Minister, offering to work with them on climate change policy. SBC executive director Abbie Reynolds says, "In our Pre-election Manifesto to MPs, SBC members called for a bi-partisan approach to climate change, so they will be delighted to see the National Party make this offer". 
Lion's three pillars for sustainability
Lion’s new sustainability report is out this month, showcasing the company’s refreshed sustainability strategy. It focuses on three pillars for sustainability; “Be Sociable and Live Well, Tread Lightly and Grow our Positive Impact”. You can find the full report here.  
Industry tackling NZ's tyre problem 
NZ’s tyre industry says it is ready to make a product stewardship scheme for tyres mandatory, and now it needs Government to get on board. SBC member 3R Group is leading the Tyrewise project, which is calling on the Ministry for the Environment to declare tyres a "priority product". 
New packaging reduces plastic imports 
More than 177 tonnes of virgin plastic will no longer be imported to NZ each year, with Countdown moving dozens of its bakery and delicatessen items to locally sourced recycled PET (rPET) packaging. Flight Plastics Ltd, which is NZ owned and operated, will now be providing 19 rPET packaging products for Countdown. Sanford's new health & safety frontman
Triple Paralympic gold medallist Cameron Leslie is the new frontman for Sanford's health and safety campaign, helping staff identify workplace risks. Cameron is a Para swimming champion, Wheel Blacks player, coach, farmer and sports writer, and an influential community role model. Underwater datacentre trial for efficiency
Microsoft has launched Project Natick, an experiment with potentially large implications, by sinking a datacentre into the sea off the Scottish island of Orkney. Most super servers are stored in giant warehouses that require huge amounts of air conditioning and humidity control. If computers can be cooled underneath the ocean, it's hoped their energy use will be dramatically reduced. Read more.

It's nearly SBC election time! The nomination period for the SBC Advisory Board and Future Leaders' Alumni representative will run from 16 - 25 July, and voting from 23 July - 8 August. An announcement of the results will happen at SBC's Annual Council Meeting on 15 August. Please keep an eye on your inbox for further details.
