Now that our latest five year strategy is live, we have put together a new two-pager talking about SBC and how we help our members. So if you want to join some of the sustainability initiatives we are leading, this overview can help you start those conversations internally. 
Featured event: Our three pillars
On Thursday 15 October, join the SBC team in a lunchtime webinar to hear more about our three strategic pillars: Leadership, Climate Action and Thriving People. They'll be chatting about the programmes of work to deliver on the pillars, and opportunities for members to be involved.
What did your bottle used to be?
In the case of Anchor milk or ecostore detergent, it might have been sugar cane - or another bottle. On October 13, Anchor is launching 2 litre bottles made from sustainable sourced sugar cane, with a lower carbon footprint over their lifetime than new HDPE bottles. And ecostore has been able to use up to 75 per cent recycled content in its bottles, mixed with sugar cane.
What's your competitive advantage post-Covid? 
With Auckland moving back to level 1 this week, New Zealand is well placed to take on work which isn't yet possible in other parts of the world. In a beautiful piece of storytelling, ATEED's Voices of Auckland campaign showcases some of the creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. 
Lining up to target Scope 3 emissions 
Large businesses are increasingly focussing on their indirect (scope 3) emissions generated by their supply chain. Toitū Envirocare is developing New Zealand’s first supply chain emissions measurement platform targeted at SMEs, to be launched in mid-November. 
Long-term thinking still needed 
Despite the disruption of Covid, leaders still need to prioritise climate action, write Dawn Baggaley, Head of Sustainability at NZ Post, and Gerri Ward, Head of Community and Sustainability at Z Energy. Their latest article has six ways to build a long-term view into your thinking.  
Circular Product Stewardship starts with design
Product stewardship can play a key role in the circular transition by looking beyond the symptoms of a linear model. thinkstep-anz explores how starting with product design can address the cause over the symptoms in the latest issue of NZ Manufacturer.  
Manufacturers call for sustainable procurement 
ManufacturingNZ has released its Election Manifesto. Priorities include a pipeline of skilled and qualified workers, on-going investments in science and innovation, and greater emphasis on the economic, social and environmental impact of government purchasing to give Kiwi firms a fair and equal opportunity to win tenders in local supply chains. 
Reporting Corner 
Ports of Auckland has published its 2020 Integrated Report, outlining progress on its sustainability intiaitives, including its goal of being a zero-emissions port by 2040.
