A New Zealand where business, people and nature thrive together
SBC and CLC have now launched our new shared vision and new five-year strategies. The SBC strategy to 2025 now focuses on three key pillars: leadership, climate action and thriving people. Join us at the Annual Council Meeting next Tuesday to find out what implementing them means for members.
Moving fast on climate action
At the launch, Jo Hendy mentioned that the Climate Change Commission has asked business via SBC and CLC what projects are there that will speed up the transition, and what government needs to do to make the transition go faster. The second Climate Action workshop was this week. Thank you for the strong engagement on this important topic. The shortlist of projects and policies will be circulated to members early next week.
Climate risk webinar now online
Last week, the Government announced a mandatory regime for disclosing climate-related financial risk. Mike Burrell took part in a panel with April Mackenzie (XRB) and Bryce Davies (IAG), hosted by Hon James Shaw and facilitated by Mark Baker-Jones (Simpson Grierson)
, to discuss the announcement. The video is now available
When is net-zero really net-zero?
While the spotlight last week was on the climate change risk reporting announcement from the Government, another significant announcement from the Science Based Targets initiative went overlooked in New Zealand, but will change how you set credible and meaningful net-zero targets. Barbara Nebel has the key takeaways in this guest blog.
5 million people. 1000 days. One big idea.
For World Green Building Week, NZGBC and Auckland Conversations hosted a webinar where a
panel of industry experts discussed the challenges they are currently facing and what they believe the new government's focus should be for the next three years. Mike Burrell was on the panel - watch again.

Support Network a diversity issue
Wanting to foster a workplace where all staff feel safe and included, AA Insurance launched an internal Support Network to help those experiencing domestic violence, which is among the country’s most serious social issues. This initiative was highly commended at the Diversity Awards 2020.
Take the green road
In April 2020, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency released a sustainability action plan, Toitū Te Taiao, that sets a vision for a low carbon, safe and healthy land transport system. Now Waka Kotahi is partnering with the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA) network to deliver sustainable outcomes across land transport infrastructure projects.
Stay ambitious for sustainability
During June 2020 BusinessNZ surveyed over a thousand businesses on the Government’s handling of the Covid-19 crisis, and on the policies business would like to see enacted after the 2020 Election. Those results include calling for government to stay ambitious for sustainability.
Recognition for women leadership on SDGs
Nominations are now open for The World Business Council for Sustainable Development Leading Women Awards, designed to recognize outstanding female leaders and to showcase their work in sustainability towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
