Ports of Auckland whale protection success The introduction of a voluntary speed limit for ships in Auckland Harbour to reduce whale deaths in Hauraki Gulf has worked. Since the initiative started in 2013, Ports of Auckland reports there has been no whale deaths. Ship noise in the Gulf has also been significantly reduced. Electric vehicles take off in NZ New statistics from the Ministry of Transport show that electric vehicles are growing rapidly in popularity across New Zealand. The low-down on Auckland's low carbon plan Auckland aims to reduce overall emissions by 40 per cent by 2040. The 2017 Low Carbon Auckland Annual update shows that the region has made progress, but it needs "an ambitious and accelerated reduction in emissions as we also prepare for the impacts of a changing climate."
