New Air New Zealand Sustainability Framework
The new Air New Zealand Sustainability Framework was presented in Auckland yesterday, with announcements including a commitment to carbon neutral growth from 2020, the launch of a new initiative to reduce in-flight waste and switching to electricity to power its aircraft while on the tarmac. Air New Zealand's Head of Sustainability Lisa Daniell says, “Reducing our carbon emissions is a key goal under our Sustainability Framework."
Social enterprise impact and new marketplace
The social enterprise dial was turned up to 11 last week at the Social Enterprise World Forum in Christchurch. Ākina Foundation and EY launched the Impact Investment Report, which looks at new methods of funding social and environmental projects. NZ Post also announced its commitment to purchase goods and services from at least three social enterprises over the next 12 months. And NZ Post, in partnership with Ākina, will fund an online marketplace where businesses can buy from certified social enterprises.
Westpac awarded first DVFREE Tick
Westpac NZ has received the first DVFREE Tick in New Zealand from Shine, a domestic violence specialist organisation. Westpac NZ is training hundreds of its employees to help victims of violence. Countdown bag ban
Countdown has announced plans to remove plastic bags from supermarkets by the end of 2018. The company says they made the decision after discovering 83% of their customers supported phasing out single-use plastic carrier bags. Managing director Dave Chambers says, "This move will result in the removal of 350 million plastic bags from our waste stream and environment." Read more here.
Sustainable stock exchange rankings
New Zealand is ranked 38 - up three places since last year - in the latest Measuring Sustainability Disclosure Report. The report ranks 55 global exchanges on overall sustainability disclosure. It concluded the world’s largest companies are under-reporting sustainability policies and performance, hampering investors’ access to data that will allow them to play a full role in the transition to a low emissions economy. Read the report findings and recommendations here.
Big GHG reductions for Auckland Airport
Congratulations Auckland Airport for a 26% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. This was achieved through a combination of plant and equipment upgrade in the international terminal, collaborating with technology partners to ensure the latest building management systems are in place, benefiting from an increasing amount of renewable energy in the New Zealand grid, introducing plug-in hybrid and hybrid vehicles into its vehicle fleet and continuing its focus on waste and water minimisation. 
Electric cars charge on
Z Energy has helped Mevo increase its fleet of electric cars for hire. Spokesman Jonathan Hill said every company in New Zealand was facing some element of change risk. "It is very clear in our business where that disruption will come from. We want to evolve our business so we have a long term future." Read more here.

Mercury and Cityhop have teamed up to enable the addition of electric vehicles to Cityhop’s car sharing platform. Mercury CEO, Fraser Whineray says, “This partnership between Mercury and Cityhop is about testing innovative and sustainable approaches to ease Auckland’s transport challenges.” Read more here.

Future-proofing the New Zealand economy
The Ministry for the Environment and Auckland Council invite SBC members to an Auckland Conversation on Future-proofing the New Zealand economy, following the release of the Our Atmosphere and Climate 2017 report the same day.
Facilitated by Kim Hill, this event is an opportunity to take part in a conversation about the report’s findings and discuss the transformative change needed to respond to climate change. The event will be held on Thursday 19th October in Auckland.
