Chapter Zero releases resources for board structure & climate capability

Chapter Zero New Zealand has released new resources on board structure and capability for effective climate governance. We're proud to have been involved in the development of these resources, which will help directors explore how to structure the board, build climate capability and engage in conversations to deliver on climate goals.

   

Government ban on new coal boilers now in place

The Government is delivering on its climate commitment to ban new coal boilers and to phase out existing ones by 2037 in an effort to reduce emissions produced by industrial process heat, one of the key recommendations from our joint SBC/CLC pre-election policy priorities briefing paper. EECA updates its guide to smart EV charging

EECA has commissioned updated guidance to help move New Zealanders towards smart charging at home, at work and on the road. "With increasing uptake and interest in EVs, the way we power them up plays a critical role in New Zealand’s electricity future, as the Government focusses on increasing electrification of our energy system."

   

Next Generation Scholarship open 

Applications are now open for the Next Generation Scholarship (sponsored by thinkstep-anz) to the Climate Change & Business Conference. This is a great opportunity for seven young people aged 18-26 to attend the conference, learn more about business' role in climate action, and make valuable industry connections as they start out on their sustainability journey. Contact celebrates 10 years of Greening Taupō programme

In June, Contact Energy celebrated the 10-year anniversary of its partnership with Greening Taupō, a community planting programme designed to enhance biodiversity across Taupō. On the anniversary, 170 volunteers came together to plant 2,000 native trees in only 40 minutes! Congratulations to Contact on this milestone.
   

The Greatest Goal - Trees that Count

As we get ready for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™, Project Crimson's Trees That Count is leading a programme to leave a legacy of Aotearoa’s hosting of the tournament. The Greatest Goal is a football-focused crowd-funding campaign asking visitors to NZ, as well as those that live here, to celebrate the tournament by donating native trees. NEW: Māori frameworks for disaster recovery and climate change (Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research)

In the wake of the devastation caused by Cyclone Gabrielle, and the increasing impact of climate change, there is a call to ensure a Māori worldview is incorporated into risk assessment frameworks and decision-making processes. Led by Manaaki Whenua Kaihautū Dr Shaun Awatere (Ngāti Porou), the impact of extreme weather events and climate change on Māori communities is being investigated by a team of researchers focused on a Te Ao Māori (Māori worldview) perspective. In this webinar Shaun will talk about his work in Te Tairāwhiti and present a Kaupapa Māori disaster risk reduction framework, which gives mana back to the environment and demonstrates the obligation to treat the environment with respect.

Commissioners James Renwick and Judy Lawrence will join Victoria University academics Amanda Thomas, Maria Bargh, and Catherine Iorns to discuss what's needed to shift the way we work, live and play to achieve a low-emissions and resilient future. By the middle of this century, high emissions lifestyles will be less affordable and high emissions industries will be more vulnerable to disruption. This discussion will focus on enabling system transformation and building resilience across Aotearoa New Zealand.

   

NEW: Shift Hub - rethink your commute (Tauranga)

Nearly 90% of journeys to work in Tauranga are by private motor vehicle, causing significant congestion challenges for the fast-growing region and contributing to emissions. So, for the month of July, Priority One with support from partners such as Mercury, Hikotron and Big Street Bikers are unveiling innovative and sustainable alternative transport options at an interactive, free showcase called ‘the Shift Hub’. From e-bikes, e-motorbikes, public transport (bus), car share, e-scooters, e-mopeds, e-skateboards, rideshare, Locky Docks, EV chargers, walking and cycling - there is plenty to learn about so residents can rethink their commute.
