The Sustainable Business Council (SBC) brought together speakers from the public and private sectors to talk about how to identify business risks and opportunities arising from ecosystem change in New Zealand. The event was held at AECOM House in Auckland on March 26th, 2015.
SBC member companies from key sectors of the NZ economy – Aotearoa Fisheries Ltd, Archeus, Contact, Fonterra and AECOM – talked about the business case for undertaking an Ecosystems Services Review (ESR) and how they assessed their dependencies and impacts on ecosystems. Event attendees engaged with these businesses through a panel discussion, facilitated by Rod Oram, and break-out groups.
Malcolm McKee from the Ministry for the Environment presented an international perspective on ecosystem change and talked about new NZ Government work in this area.

Introduction by event host, Mark Drury, Executive General Manager – Strategy and Growth at AECOM. Mark Christensen, Partner at Anderson Lloyd and Champion of the SBC Ecosystem Health work programme, MC’d the event and talks about why this issue is important to business. Richard Gordon, Chief Executive Officer of Landcare Research and Champion of the SBC Ecosystem Health work programme, talks about the broader context of ecosystem health in New Zealand and World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) work in this area.

SBC Ecosystems Services Review (ESR) pilot
Representatives from the SBC member companies who participated in the SBC pilot of the Ecosystems Services Review (ESR) tool talk about how they used the tool and benefits and outcomes for their business. Suzie Greenhalgh, Portfolio Leader at Landcare Research provides an overview of the ESR process, with key insights into the outcomes for all businesses. Ecosystem health in New Zealand: A public sector perspective and new work
Malcolm McKee, Director, Stewardship at the Ministry for the Environment, introduces new work from NZ Statistics and the Ministry for the Environment and why this is relevant to business. He also talks about international policy perspectives on ecosystem change.
