BraveTrace
BraveTrace is Aotearoa New Zealand's independent third-party verifier for renewable energy. Our purpose is to accelerate the renewable transition by providing businesses and organisations with the tools and assurance they need to meet reportable emissions reduction and renewable energy targets with confidence.
We do this by operating the New Zealand Energy Certificate System (NZECS), a trusted platform for the issuance, tracking, and redemption of New Zealand Energy Certificates (NZ-ECs). NZ-ECs are currently available for renewable electricity and biomethane, with work underway to expand into other energy and transport markets.
Widely adopted across Aotearoa through the BraveTrace Network, NZ-ECs enable businesses to prove that they own the renewable attributes of the generation they choose to support, allow immediate reportable emissions reduction, and create additional revenue for renewable producers. Global reporting standards (GHG Protocol, ISO 14064-1:2018) recognise NZ-ECs as providing the highest level of accuracy and credibility for renewable energy claims.
By purchasing NZ-ECs, organisations gain three key benefits:
● Traceable and verifiable claims – Every megawatt hour (MWh) consumed is directly matched with a MWh produced by a verified renewable generator.
● Robust reporting – Scope 2 emissions can be reported as zero under international standards, backed by a detailed BraveTrace verification report.
● Systemic impact – NZ-ECs prevent double-counting and incentivise further action by raising the carbon intensity of New Zealand’s Residual Supply Mix (RSM).
Choosing NZ-ECs is the best way to support our renewable future. It helps you achieve emissions reduction and renewable energy targets, demonstrate with confidence your commitment to sustainability, and accelerate the deployment of renewable energy here in Aotearoa.
