The New Zealand Institute for Earth Science Limited (Earth Sciences New Zealand) is a Crown Research Institute incorporated as a company on 1 July 2025. It is established by the merger of NIWA and GNS Science, and incorporating the scientific expertise and research services provided by both organisations. Ownership is held equally between two shareholding Ministers appointed by the New Zealand Government and governed by a Crown-appointed Board of Directors.
The Shareholders' expectations of Earth Sciences New Zealand are contained in the Statement of Core Purpose that defines our purpose, expected outcomes, scope of operation and operating principles. The Statement of Corporate Intent (SCI) sets out Earth Sciences New Zealand's strategy for delivering against this core purpose over the next five years. The SCI is reviewed annually.
Earth Sciences New Zealand’s geological hazards, weather hazards, energy, land and freshwater, climate, oceans and advanced technologies capability is provided by more than 1200 staff and $400 million of assets located across 22 locations in four main centres and 11 regional locations. Earth Sciences New Zealand also maintains nationally important databases and collections, science assets and capabilities that enable it and its collaborators to undertake much of its science. These include GeoNet and the national climate, atmospheric, marine, freshwater and groundwater monitoring networks and databases, deep-sea research vessels, high performance computing and big data analytics facilities, the nation’s primary geothermal research facility and finfish aquaculture research facility, and a range of specialist materials science, isotopic, analytical and modelling capabilities unique to Earth Sciences New Zealand.
