New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA)

The Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency shapes, develops and manages New Zealand’s national land transport system, in partnership with local government, to keep the country moving.

We recognise that a great transport system helps people to get the most out of life – it gets goods to market, connects communities, and makes education, employment and other essential services accessible for everyone.

We:

manage and maintain 11,000kms of state highway to support economic growth and tourism;
work in partnership to plan for growth in cities, towns and regions, ensuring land use planning and the transport system are integrated;
co-invest in the development and maintenance of the 80,000kms of local roads;
work and co-invest in the development of your urban cycleways and walkways, and public transport networks to make it easier for people to get around;
manage driver and vehicle licensing; and
regulate the transport industry to make it safer for everyone.
Together with our partners we’re working to deliver one integrated transport system for New Zealand that is safer, accessible and provides people with choice on how they move around. Well-planned transport investment delivers social, economic and environmental benefits and contributes to wellbeing outcomes.

We’re listening to our customers, embracing new technology and responding to change so we can deliver a transport system that is efficient, sustainable and meets the needs of tomorrow.

Our commitment to New Zealand is great journeys to keep New Zealand moving.
