Video update from Mike Burrell – 14 October

Kia ora koutou, no doubt you would have all seen the big news that was out yesterday with the Government starting consultation on the Emissions Reduction Plan which is its response to the Climate Change Commission’s advice.

SBC and CLC have put out an initial press statement in response to the release which you can find on our website and right now we are in the process of reviewing the detail of the document and we’ll be sending you through our initial analysis by the end of this week.

While it’s clear that there’s still a lot of work to be done between now and when the final version of this comes out, we are told that this will be an iterative process in which government engages meaningfully with our members so that together we can meet the challenge and create a final plan that all Aotearoa New Zealanders can get behind. We remain confident that through genuine partnership between government and business we can bend the emissions curve in the short time that we have left.

With submissions on the ERP due by 24 November we will be producing a joint CLC/SBC submission following a very similar process to that that we used earlier this year when we responded to the Commission’s advice. This will include online workshops and two review rounds, details of which should have landed in inboxes yesterday.

We realise that this comes at a stressful and uncertain time with ongoing challenges for Covid, particularly for members in Auckland and Northland, but we know that climate action can’t wait for a post-Covid world and we’ll be sending a message to government that this is essential work that requires ambition and pace and needs to start now.

Take care out there and I look forward to engaging with all of you throughout our consultation process as we get stuck into the detail in order to deliver a considered and strong submission to government. Talk to you soon.
