Video update 10 September
Hello again. I’m happy to say we can now announce the dates for the joint SBC/CLC strategy launch and our Annual SBC Council Meeting and we’ve managed to secure nearly all of our original speakers. We’ve moved to a completely online format, and to reduce any chances of Zoom fatigue we are holding it on two separate days.
The joint strategy launch with the Climate Leaders Coalition will take place on Thursday 24 September from 8.30 – 10.00am, so you are welcome to BYO croissants and coffee for that.
The Annual Council Meeting will be on Tuesday 29 September from 4.00-5.30pm and for those who are interested we will have time for networking and a virtual drink after that.
We have sent out an email with the new registration links. If you haven’t received this, please let us know. If you’ve already registered for the previous event, we just ask that you reconfirm your attendance, given the new timeslots.
Over the next few days, we will send out our strategy to Council Members and Liaison Delegates under embargo ahead of the official launch on the 24th and we hope there will be some lively discussion that emerges from this.
We’re really excited about the joint vision we’ve developed with the Climate Leaders Coalition and we think this will really give our combined membership a chance to lead the business community for genuine change.
In terms of the strategy launch:
- Our MC for the day is Sinead Boucher, the CEO of Stuff
- The keynote speaker is Dr Rod Carr, the Chair of the Climate Change Commission
- And we have a panel comprising..
- SBC Chair, Karen Silk
- CLC Convener, Mike Bennetts,
- CEO of the Climate Change Commission, Jo Hendy
- and myself
At the Annual Council Meeting, we’ll be talking about how we implement the new strategy. Karen will give a presentation on our achievements over the past year and I will set out the year ahead. And then we will hear from some of our business leaders on how they will lead on various aspects of the new strategy.
Volker Kuntzsch, Deputy Chair of SBC, will facilitate the panel, and the speakers will be:
- Alison Andrew, CEO, Transpower
- Malcolm Johns, CEO, Christchurch International Airport, and
- Claire Walker, Chief People & Culture Officer, SkyCity Entertainment Group
This is a great line-up and there will be an opportunity for you to ask questions and provide your perspectives on the new direction for SBC.

I hope you are all doing ok in these challenging times of level 2 and 2.5.
We know this has all had a big impact on businesses, and we hope that what we will get out of this is a better pathway forward. Kia kaha.
We are in the process of finalising dates for our Annual Council Meeting and joint business breakfast, which were both impacted by the changes in level.
This is likely to be in the last part of September and will be fully online. We will send out more details shortly.
We are keen to get our new strategy out there so we can start talking to the wider world about it, and more importantly start implementing it.
So we’ll be sharing it with Council Members and Liaison Delegates under embargo ahead of the official launch. Please look out for that in the next few days.
Speaking of which, we’re working on our impact framework which will measure the impact of our strategy.
This will be about the collective impact, looking at what our membership is achieving together to make a difference for New Zealand.
We released our pre-election briefing a few weeks ago, and our preliminary engagement on it has been very positive.
The four parties we have talked to asked us for more detail on the climate pillar in particular.
In response to that, we will be bringing together the top priorities that our members and Climate Leaders Coalition signatories want to see on climate action from political parties and ultimately from the new Government in October.
