Sorting through glass ‘mountain’ in Otago

Otago Daily Times interviews Penny Garland from O-I New Zealand and SBC’s Kate Alcock about their work to remove glass from an Otago landfill ‘mountain’ and ship it to the O-I site in Auckland for reuse.

Eight staff from O-I and Kate Alcock volunteered over the weekend at Central Otago’s WasteBusters yard to sort through coloured glass. Recycling glass had multiple environmental benefits, including reducing energy use and carbon dioxide emissions as well as reducing the amount of raw materials needed for production.

Penny Garland, sustainability manager at O-I New Zealand, said, ”We see this glass mountain as a valuable resource and, of course, glass is 100% endlessly recyclable, so this material will go into making more bottles, as well as reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.”
