SBC offers members and their employees many different opportunities to connect in with others, share knowledge, collaborate and showcase best practice. By pooling time, resources, ideas and energy together to tackle challenges, members are able to influence change faster and on a larger scale than they would be able to achieve alone.
In 2018, a number of members in the freight industry approached SBC individually with the same problem: their transportation emissions were huge, and they wondered if other members were finding theirs the same. SBC brought these members together to collaborate on the Low Carbon Freight Pathway, an ambitious but achievable 30-year plan to progressively decarbonise New Zealand’s freight system.
Through this successful collaboration, SBC realised it had a unique ability to connect members in similar industries facing similar challenges together. We also began to see demand from more members for different types of forums where they can come together to go further faster and boost their collective impact, which led us to establish various opportunities for connection.
What we Offer
Advocacy
We offer opportunities for members to come together to shape and advance shared positions on cross-sectoral issues. This includes coordinated election briefings, input into consultations (e.g. voluntary nature and carbon markets), and aligning messages to strengthen collective impact. Participation is voluntary and designed to reflect a diversity of member perspectives.

Communities of Practice
We offer a number of communities of practice (each centred around a specific topic or business ‘department’). The purpose of these are to provide a forum for practitioners to have dialogue and engagement, share learnings and best practices, stay abreast of the latest news and updates, provide upskilling and drive action, and assess opportunities for collaboration in a safe, non-competitive environment.
The Collaborative Advantage
Climate Adaptation Community of Practice
Established February 2022, the Climate Adaptation Community of Practice (CoP) was established to support CLC/SBC member organisations in understanding and taking action on climate adaptation. The CoP provides a space for members to build capability, share practical insights, and learn from each other as organisations respond to the growing impacts of climate change. It is designed as a ‘listen, learn, connect, and ask questions’ forum, focused on real-world application, emerging challenges, and peer exchange.
If you’d like to join, please get in touch. Charlotte Kootstra.
Nature Positive Community of Practice
Established July 2024, the Nature Positive Community of Practice (CoP) was established following the Beca and SBC Nature Positive workshop series, creating a space for members to continue the conversation, share insights, and build capability on nature-related topics. From 2025, the CoP expanded to be open to all SBC members working on nature, supporting a broader range of organisations at different stages of their nature journeys. The CoP is designed as a ‘listen, learn, connect, and ask questions’ forum, focused on practical insights, emerging developments, and peer exchange.
If you’d like to join, please get in touch. Charlotte Kootstra.
Climate Reporting Community of Practice
Established March 2024, the Climate Reporting Community of Practice (CoP) was established following the SBC, Deloitte, KPMG and Toitū climate-related disclosures readiness workshop series, creating a space for members to connect, share insights, and build capability on climate-related disclosures. Following changes to the mandated climate reporting regime in Aotearoa in 2026, the scope of the CoP has broadened to cover both mandatory and voluntary climate reporting. The CoP is open to all SBC members and is designed as a ‘listen, learn, connect, and ask questions’ forum, supporting ongoing learning, practical insights, and peer exchange.
