Trump election doesn’t make climate change go away
BusinessNZ says Trump winning the US Presidential election does not mean climate change is going away.
Head of Climate Change Policy, John Carnegie says, “We see this as a temporary speed bump in continuing to create a resilient economy. This remains in New Zealand’s long-term interests.
“We need to continue to progress the transition to a low-carbon economy in new and innovative ways. This may look different to what it was pre-Trump, depending on what transpires, but our goal remains the same.
“It’s not yet clear what Trump winning will mean, so let’s not have a knee-jerk reaction. It certainly won’t be business as usual, but we need to see how Trump being President translates into policy.
“The fact that this election result has happened supports cautious, carefully thought-out policy. More than ever we need to be mindful of the international competitiveness of New Zealand exporters, as well as delivering what global consumers want.”
Executive Director of the Sustainable Business Council, Abbie Reynolds says, “Transitioning to a low-emissions economy is a challenge that global business is already actively addressing. In New Zealand we have strong cross-sector collaboration and action is already underway. Let’s keep focussed on the opportunities of longer term thinking on resilience and short term action on efficiency.”
