With climate and business taking centre stage in Tamaki Makaurau Auckland this month at the Climate Change and Business Conference, another key global climate event is following hot on its heels – COP27.
This year COP is being held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt from 6 – 18 November.
SBC’s Head of Climate Kate Wilson Butler caught up with Climate Change Ambassador Kay Harrison to explore some of her key insights about the international climate response, COP27 and beyond – and reflects on the top 3 takeaways that came out of the discussion.
Kay’s top 3 insights include:
- There’s no time to lose in responding to the climate crisis but we have the tools we need to do it – not least the Paris Agreement.
- COP26 was about upping climate ambition internationally, now the focus has turned to delivery at home, which means COP27 will be more of a ‘working COP’ with fewer big milestones and announcements.
- Targets aren’t enough – we need action now if we are to bend the emissions curve before 2030. COP 28 in the United Arab Emirates in 2023 will be a key chance to take stock on progress.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade will be holding a series of briefing webinars for stakeholders about COP27 during October. SBC will share the details of these events when available.
